Lino Gentilini Award

The Fondazione ing. Lino Gentilini - ETS in cooperation with the University of Roma Tor Vergata announces each year one award for a master's thesis and one award for a doctoral dissertation on the history of structural engineering.

2026 edition

The Fondazione ing. Lino Gentilini - ETS in cooperation with the University of Roma Tor Vergata announces two awards for master's theses and doctoral dissertations focused on the history of structural engineering. The objective of this initiative is to share the Foundation's vast archival documentation and debate the cultural themes connected with the professional and scientific work of Lino Gentilini (1933-2001). The 2026 Lino Gentilini Award takes place with the patronage of AITEC, Federbeton, ANAI, and Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Trento. The Fondazione ing. Lino Gentilini - ETS was founded on August 8th, 2013, and is based in Trento, Italy. Its primary objective is the support and implementation of educational and research initiatives in the context of engineering and scientific research, inspired by the historical and cultural preservation of the comprehensive engineering work performed by Lino Gentilini. This announcement encompasses two separate awards. The first award is for a master's thesis developed at an Italian university. The second award is for a doctoral dissertation developed at a university located in one of the countries belonging to the Council of Europe.

Art. 1 – RESEARCH TOPICS

The Lino Gentilini Award intends to promote research in the field of history of structural engineering, with special emphasis on themes that benefit from multidisciplinary, comparative, and critical perspectives. Under this premise, special attention will be given to works that treat and/or combine a diverse spectrum of research topics, always within a unified historiographical perspective that has engineering work and structural design at the center of the analysis. Possible research topics related to the main historical theme include, but are not limited to: history of civil engineering and constructions, history of transport and traffic engineering, economic history, history of entrepreneurship, social history, history of labor and business organization, development of new materials or technological solutions for engineering applications with specific focus on decarbonization strategies for construction, specific investigations of engineering works of unique interest, history of infrastructural, regional, and urban development, historical studies on the environmental and landscape context, development of information technology applied to design. Special consideration will be given to interdisciplinary works that investigate topics from different perspectives with adequate awareness of the historical, economic, social, and cultural context and with an eye to the humanistic side of problems. Contributions must also include a correct and as much as possible comprehensive empirical, documentary, bibliographic and archival analysis. The research work may be carried out using the documentary and archival heritage of the Fondazione ing. Lino Gentilini - ETS and, if necessary, with the logistic support of the same and the advice of its collaborators.

Art. 2 – MASTER'S THESIS AWARD RECIPIENTS

The award is intended for graduates who have obtained a master's degree at an Italian university. It is possible to apply with a master's thesis the topic of which is listed among those specified in Art. 1 and the defense of which took place in the period from January 1st, 2024 to December 31st, 2025. Applications already submitted to previous calls of this award will not be considered.

Art. 3 – DOCTORAL DISSERTATION AWARD RECIPIENTS

The award is intended for graduates who have obtained a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) at a university located in one of the countries belonging to the Council of Europe. It is possible to apply with a doctoral dissertation the topic of which is listed among those specified in Art. 1 and the defense of which took place in the period from January 1st, 2024, to December 31st, 2025. Applications already submitted to previous calls of this award will not be considered.

Art. 4 – APPLICATION

The application shall be submitted online using the following URL address https://fondazionegentilini.ddns.net:15633/application.html by 24:00 (UTC+2) Sunday June 28th, 2026. Applicants shall submit the following attachments as pdf documents (max dimension of each file 500 MB): copy of the master's thesis / doctoral dissertation in the original language, together with a translation into Italian or English if the master's thesis / doctoral dissertation was written in a language other than these two; abstract both in Italian and in English (100-150 words); curriculum vitae; recommendation letter from thesis/dissertation advisor; academic transcript with final degree, courses and grades; copy of a valid document proving identity.

Art. 5 – EVALUATION COMMITTEE

The Evaluation Committee, which will bestow the awards, will be formed by a professor appointed by the University of Roma Tor Vergata, a professor from another Italian university, and two other members of foreign research institutions or universities, selected on the basis of their peer-reviewed works and/or experience in the topics covered by this announcement. The Evaluation Committee may also rely upon the scientific and technical advice of external specialists with expertise in one of the specific research topics. The Evaluation Committee will bestow the awards based on an indisputable decision that will take into account the quality and the scientific and cultural brilliance of the contributions, as specified in Art. 1.

Art. 6 – AWARDS

The recipients of the best master's thesis and the best doctoral dissertation will be awarded a cash prize of euro 800 and euro 1.600, respectively, which will be paid by the Fondazione ing. Lino Gentilini - ETS before or during the award ceremony. In the event of an ex-aequo award, the amount of the prize will be shared equally among the winners. Cash prizes amounts shall be awarded as specified above, and the award recipients shall be responsible for any taxation required by law. The final decision will be published on the website of the Fondazione ing. Lino Gentilini - ETS. The outcome of the evaluation will be also notified to the winners, who must send a declaration of acceptance or refusal of the award within the deadline set by such notification. In the event that none of the submitted master's theses or doctoral dissertations or both is identified as deserving the award, the Evaluation Committee can reassign the cash awards to the next round of the Lino Gentilini Award.

Giovanni Conca

L’usine Brionvega de Marco Zanuso (1916-2001). Architecture, design, paysage.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

The dissertation centres on the work of Marco Zanuso and in particular on the Brionvega factory, built in the mid-1960s at Casella d'Asolo, and examines in depth the role of Silvano Zorzi, one of the heroes of the Italian school of engineering, in the design of its original hyperbolic-paraboloid roof. The research is thoroughly documented and detailed, rich in fine images and in the author's own very useful redrawings. The candidate shows a considerable aptitude for research in the history of construction.

Giovanni Conca graduated from the Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio in 2015 and has practised in Geneva, Paris, Milan and Neuchatel. Since 2016 he has been registered with the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators of the Province of Lecco. He currently works in private practice and is a researcher at the Archivio del Moderno in Balerna - Universita della Svizzera Italiana, as well as a lecturer at the Scuola universitaria della Svizzera Italiana. In December 2024 he obtained his doctorate in architecture at the Ecole nationale superieure d'architecture de Versailles (LeaV/Universite de Paris-Saclay).

Rune Frandsen

Shadow Territory and Secondary Infrastructures: The Hidden Landscapes of Temporary Labor at the Grande Dixence (1950–1965).

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

The dissertation investigates secondary infrastructure, with particular attention to temporary workers' settlements, and the organisation of labour behind the construction of dams in Switzerland after the Second World War, focusing on the Grande Dixence dam site (1950-1965). Among the strengths of the work are the author's well-documented personal survey of the mountain territory in search of traces of the works, and the highly effective writing.

Rune Frandsen is a postdoctoral researcher at EPFL in Lausanne in the Heritage, Anthropology and Technologies (HAT) research group led by Professor Florence Graezer Bideau. Trained as an architect at EPFL, he graduated in 2015 before working in several architectural offices in Geneva, where he specialized in timber construction. He subsequently completed a Master of Advanced Studies in the History and Theory of Architecture at the gta Institute, ETH Zurich.
In 2020, he joined ETH Zurich as a doctoral researcher within the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) project "Industrialization in the Alps" led by Prof. Günther Vogt. He received his PhD in 2023 under the co-supervision of Professor Silke Langenberg. His dissertation committee also included Prof. Hollyamber Kennedy, and Dr. Seraina Renz. His research explores the intersections of architecture, heritage, and administrative practices, with a particular interest in spatial histories of labor.

Andrea Olivieri

La città universitaria di San Martino a Genova. Il brevetto Hennebique applicato alla copertura dell’ex Istituto di Chimica Generale.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

The thesis develops a historical, technical and structural analysis of the roof of the former Institute of General Chemistry in the San Martino university district in Genoa, built in the early twentieth century in reinforced concrete under the Hennebique patent. Consulting the original design drawings allowed the author to carry out the analysis of structural behaviour and the diagnosis of decay with real understanding, and to propose possible strengthening measures. The work examines the building's significance in the history of construction and engineering to a good level of depth.

Andrea Olivieri obtained his Master's degree in Building Engineering and Architecture at the University of Genoa in 2024.

Doctoral dissertation award recipient

Christian Toson

Il contributo ingegneristico e architettonico italiano durante il periodo delle riforme architettoniche di Chrušcëv (1954-1964).

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Christian Toson devoted his doctoral work, carried out at the Universita IUAV di Venezia, to the period of radical transformation in construction and design methods in the Soviet Union between 1954 and 1964. The Committee acknowledges the extensive and careful fieldwork in archival material, the overcoming of the language barrier, and the skill and capacity for comparison, including in the explanatory phase, between Italian and Soviet designers and design traditions. All this makes it an excellent work of rare quality.

Christian Toson studied architecture from 2012 to 2017 at the IUAV in Venice and at the University of St Petersburg, Russia. He graduated in 2018 with a thesis on the architecture of St Petersburg and Palmyra. He has continued his research into architectural theory and has worked in private practice since 2018.

Giuseppe Galbiati

Preserving suspended structures with light façades (1960-1980). Architectural study and retrofi tting proposals.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Giuseppe Galbiati carried out his doctorate at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and the Universite Catholique de Louvain, setting out to demonstrate, on the basis of a thorough historical study of suspended-structure buildings, the scientific soundness of design interventions that respect the existing fabric. The Committee recognises that the dissertation, in two parts, is well constructed: the first part offers a rigorous historical approach, while the second presents an interesting updating with design proposals that address questions of energy performance. It has a monographic character in which the relationships between the history of engineering and the conservation project are developed. The result is overall a very good piece of work, well in keeping with the purposes of the award.

Giuseppe Galbiati is an engineer and architect. He studied at the Politecnico di Milano, where he graduated in Architectural Engineering (2020) and later at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne and the UCLouvain, where he earned - in cotutelle - his PhD (2023, title of the thesis: ‘Preserving suspended structures with light façades (1960-1980). Architectural study and retrofitting proposals’). Galbiati is currently postdoctoral researcher and teaching assistant at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, USI. His interests deal with the fields of construction history, architectural preservation and energy efficiency of existing buildings, developing and testing interdisciplinary methodologies for the thermal retrofitting of the second post-war building stock.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Martina Motta devoted her doctoral work, carried out at the Politecnico di Torino, to the study of Baroque-period architecture in Turin seen through the territories from which the timber for its construction was extracted. The Committee highlights the great relevance of the archival and bibliographic research undertaken, directly pertinent to the history of construction, noting the originality, the systematic character and the rigour of the research.

Martina Motta is a researcher in the field of environmental history. She obtained her Master's degree in Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano in 2013 and her doctorate in the History of Architecture at the Politecnico di Torino in 2023. She is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Pavia. Between 2014 and 2020 she carried out research in international settings: the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale (2014); the Oslo Architecture Triennale (2016); OMA - Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Rotterdam (2016-2017); Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial (2018); MAAT - Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, Lisbon (2020). Her research interests concern the impact of architecture on extractive territories, historical transitions in the use of natural resources, and the emergence of conflict in the modern age.

Aleksandra Kosykh

Pioneers of Modern Construction. Building with Iron in 18th-Century Russia.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Aleksandra Andreevna Kosykh has produced an original work of exceptional interest on the history of the construction of metal roofs in Russia, taking the analysis back to the pioneering phase before the nineteenth century and revealing important connections between the Russian building tradition of the eighteenth century and the English and French ones. Besides the bibliographic apparatus, the research drew on a great many archival sources, direct investigation of significant case studies and analysis of materials. The work was carried out under the guidance of excellent scholars of the history of metal construction at the University of Cottbus, Germany.

Aleksandra Kosykh is a civil engineer and construction historian. She holds a master’s degree in Underground and Civil Engineering from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University in Perm (2007–2013). She worked as a structural engineer in 2013-2015 and graduated from the Advanced Master’s Program in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions that was offered at the University of Minho, Guimaraes, and the Czech Technical University in Prague, in 2016. Between 2017 and 2022, Aleksandra was a member of the Research-Training Group “Cultural and Technological Significance of Historic Buildings” at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, where she worked on her doctorate on load-bearing iron structures that were built in Russia in the 18th century. Results of this research were published in 2023. Aleksandra currently lives in Berlin. She works as a planner for monument care, restoration and repair work on historic buildings.

Giulia Boller

The Model as a Working Method. Heinz Isler’s Experimental Approach to Shell Design.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Giulia Boller devoted her doctoral work, carried out at ETH Zurich, to the Swiss engineer Heinz Isler (1926-2009), among the most significant designers of thin reinforced-concrete shells. The study focused on the original scale models he conceived for form-finding, and went so far as to reveal and document the secret and hitherto unsuspected scientific work behind their design, opening new perspectives on the study of his works. The doctorate drew on access to the designer's private archive, held at the same Swiss university.

Giulia Boller is a lecturer and post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich. She is both an engineer and an architect. Her research interests lie at the interface between history, architecture and structural engineering. In 2022 she completed her doctoral dissertation at ETH Zurich, investigating the role of models in the engineering practice of the Swiss engineer Heinz Isler, under the supervision of Prof. Dr Joseph Schwartz. Her dissertation received the 2023 Premio Lino Gentilini for the best doctoral dissertation in the history of engineering, and the ETH Medal for outstanding doctoral theses. Giulia gained professional experience at the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. She graduated with honours in Building Engineering and Architecture from the University of Trento in 2015.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Chiara Gaddi, Cecilia Lega and Claudia Rota Graziosi worked as a team on a rich and articulated thesis, carried out at the Politecnico di Milano, on Pier Luigi Nervi's former Manifattura Tabacchi in Bologna. The three scholars developed the subject from a meticulous analysis of the construction history of the original building, in the aftermath of the Second World War, through to a possible project for the recovery, refunctionalisation and enhancement of Nervi's original reinforced-concrete structures, showing a passion for research in the history of engineering that the committee encourages them to sustain in the future.

Boris Hamzeian

Centre National d’Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou: Monument National e Live Centre of Information. Cronache di idea, progetto e fabbricazione, 1968-1977.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Boris Hamzeian has produced excellent work on the conception and architectural genesis of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, as well as on the constructional fortunes and the technical and engineering solutions involved in its realisation. Hamzeian's dissertation stands as a fundamental stage in the study of this important building of contemporary architecture, offering an unprecedented reconstruction, rich in detail and in cultural, social and political references, in interdisciplinary comparisons, and pervaded by a careful critical sense, fully aware of the history of architecture and of structural engineering. The research reads as a chronicle of events of the highest historical profile, carefully sifting a vast literature and drawing on important primary and archival sources.

Boris Hamzeian (doctorate at EPFL, 2021) is an architect and architectural historian specialising in the avant-gardes of the second post-war period, in the experiments of so-called 'technomorphic' architecture, and in experimental teaching practices in architecture in the 1960s. He is a researcher in the architecture department of the Musee national d'art moderne - MNAM CCI at the Centre Pompidou, where he is responsible for the inventory and the promotion of the archive of the construction of the Centre Pompidou, advising on the Centre Pompidou 2025-2030 transformation project and editing a series devoted to the architectural and constructional history of the Centre. He is currently a fellow at the Academie d'Architecture de France - La Cite Internationale des Arts, co-director of a research project promoted by the Italian Council programme of the Italian Ministry of Culture, and associate lecturer at the Ecole nationale superieure d'architecture de Saint-Etienne.

Sofia Nannini

The Icelandic Concrete Saga: Architecture and Construction (1847-1958).

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Sofia Nannini earned a special acknowledgment from the Evaluation Committee for having addressed, with rigour and careful investigation, the history of the technique and of the applications of concrete and reinforced concrete in Iceland between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, offering an unprecedented comparative analysis of the technological and constructional aspects, of local architecture and of Icelandic engineering culture in that period. The originality of the study, the demanding research undertaken by the candidate and the assured, compelling narrative were particularly appreciated.

Sofia Nannini has been a fixed-term researcher in the History of Architecture at the Politecnico di Torino since 2023. Between 2021 and 2023 she was a research fellow at the University of Bologna and an adjunct lecturer at the universities of Bologna, Florence, Pavia and IAAD. She is the author of 'Icelandic Farmhouses: Identity, landscape and construction (1790-1945)' (Firenze University Press, 2023) and of 'The Icelandic Concrete Saga: Architecture and Construction (1847-1958)' (Jovis, 2024). She sits on the editorial boards of the journals 'Architectural Histories' and 'Studi e ricerche di storia dell'architettura'. She was a visiting research fellow at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH, 2022, with the support of the Fondazione Lerici) and a research fellow at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA, 2023). She is currently working on a book manuscript provisionally titled 'The Mechanization of Life: An Architectural History of Intensive Animal Farming'.

L’acciaio nella Scuola italiana di Ingegneria: la sede Rai in Viale Mazzini a Roma (1962-1965).

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Federica Di Serafino has analysed in depth the construction history of the RAI headquarters in viale Mazzini in Rome (1962-1965), designed by the architects F. Berarducci and A. Fioroni, setting it appropriately within the broader framework of the twentieth-century Italian school of engineering, with an interesting comparison with the La Rinascente building in Piazza Fiume in Rome. The fruit of solid archival research, the work is accompanied by an interesting technical and iconographic apparatus, as well as by a thorough investigation of the steel structure. Nor does it lack general considerations on the historical, economic and architectural context in which the building was realised.

Federica Di Serafino obtained her Master's degree with honours in Engineering and Building Techniques at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. A Project Manager since 2019 and registered with ISIPM, she has worked since 2020 at Rete Ferroviaria Italiana in the fields of railway traffic safety, project management and training. Since 2023 she has collaborated on international projects between RFI and UIC concerning the development and dissemination of a culture of safety, as well as on projects relating to digitalisation and BIM.

Assessment of the Evaluation Committee

Vincenzo Pace has addressed, with passion, care and consistency, a project for environmental regeneration through the recovery of a site of industrial archaeology, the Zippitelli cement works at Montegiordano (CS). The work is accompanied by extensive research into the industrial history of cement in Italy, as well as into material and structural aspects, particularly concerning the prefabrication of reinforced concrete, thereby offering solid technical, historical and architectural foundations for an interesting project of recovery for cultural purposes and of renaturalisation of the site, within the fields of ecological engineering and landscape architecture.

Vincenzo Pace graduated with top marks in Architecture at the University of Basilicata, Matera campus, and is today an architect and a doctoral candidate in the Cities and Landscapes: Architecture, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, History and Resources doctoral school of the Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures at Unibas. After a dissertation addressing the regeneration of disused industrial heritage, and specifically of Italian cement works, his research now focuses on walking routes and their use: in particular on how to apply game design for all to a system of slow travel along the border between Basilicata and Calabria, seeking to create relationships between and with the communities it passes through. He volunteers at the Matera prison, where he works with inmates on the newspaper of the association Disma odv, of which he is a founding member and president.

Eliana Alessandrelli has presented an extremely original and innovative work, proceeding from careful archival research and a thorough review of the scientific literature, without neglecting the grey literature. The work, developed appropriately from the standpoint of the history of structural engineering and of the socio-economic context, addresses previously unexplored themes and makes a significant contribution to research on important figures of the twentieth-century Italian school of engineering. Three cases are considered: Eugenio Miozzi's so-called 'trucked' bridges, thin-arch bridges with stiffening decks, and the Melan type bridges perfected by Giulio Krall.

Eliana Alessandrelli studied Building Engineering and Architecture at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, graduating with honours in February 2013 with a thesis entitled 'Seismic exposure and adaptation of the Ovipol pavilion of the Mercati Generali complex in Rome', centred on a method of structural strengthening using fibre-reinforced composite materials. She is currently a doctoral candidate in Civil Engineering (Architecture and Construction) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Since the beginning of 2013 she has carried out research in collaboration with the SIXXI group, coordinated by Sergio Poretti and Tullia Iori, studying the Italian contribution to twentieth-century structural engineering. Eliana's research is devoted in particular to the figure of Eugenio Miozzi and focuses mainly on techniques for eliminating parasitic stresses in arch bridges: the method of systematic deformations and the method of systematic cracking.

Vito Quadrato has developed a particularly compelling theme: the span as an architectural and engineering element and its application within the industrial building culture of the second post-war period. The study of a number of industrial plants built in Italy after the Second World War brings out a series of new experiments in the use of reinforced concrete. The approach, at once philosophical and technical, proceeding from a substantial historical reflection that is original and richly documented, allows the author a broad and articulated view, which constitutes an important element in the history of the applications of reinforced concrete and, more generally, of the technology of contemporary architecture.

Vito Quadrato is an architect and adjunct lecturer on the course in Materials and the Design of Building Elements in the ArCoD department of the Politecnico di Bari, where he was a junior assistant professor until 2023. In 2019 he won the seventh edition of the Premio Federico Maggia promoted by the Fondazione Sella, 'Visions and change. Young designers manufacture ideas', with the installation 'Gravitazioni. Di-stanze di pietra'. In 2024 he obtained the national scientific qualification as an associate professor in CEAR-08/C, Technological Design of Architecture. His publications investigate technological culture in the architectural heritage of the Modern period, with reference to the expressiveness of construction in the use of materials in architecture.

Assessment expressed by the Evaluation Committee: Raffaele Merone has presented interesting and evocative research in the field of technological applications that allow the survey and virtual representation of archaeological heritage, in this case that of the Piscina Mirabilis, a Roman-period reservoir for military use in the area of the Campi Flegrei. The work presents an engaging multidisciplinary analysis that encompasses the use of tools of hydraulics, spatial analysis and three-dimensional modelling, as well as a careful historical and topographical framing of the context in which the Roman infrastructure was built, supported by an informed use of documentary sources and on-site surveys.

Building Engineer and Architect. After his studies he has collaborated with universities and associations engaged in the public enjoyment of cultural heritage, and as a freelance with engineering and architectural practices. In November 2022 he began a doctorate in Architecture at the University of Naples Federico II.
